Check out the visible shock waves generated by this Royal Netherlands Air Force F-35A Lighting II as it flies through !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in California. Think of the canyon as the American version of the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in Wales.

That is awesome!

Also today I learned our air force is called the Royal Netherlands Air Force, instead of Royal Dutch Air Force like I expected.

For some reason, the abbreviation is RNIAF. Not sure what the “I” is for.

I had the same thought.

Wikipedia states the abbreviation as RNLAF, which makes more sense.

That does make more sense. I must have mistaken the L for an I.

That’s because there’s no ‘I’. It’s an L, or at least that’s how I see it on their website. So RNLAF. The L is presumably from R oyal N ether l ands A ir F orce, though that is still a little weird (possibly to disambiguate between them and the Royal Norwegian Air Force).

Pity painting it like this probably ruins the stealthiness:

That might be the only way to make the F-35 look good. Because, really, it’s an ugly duckling.

Yeah, Dutch Engineer pointed out my mistake.

I don’t think it’s that bad. A bit chunky from some angles, but on the whole, I don’t think it’s an ugly plane.

I suppose it could have been worse.

B-52 is the BUFF (Big Ugly Fat (or Friendly) Fucker), A-7 was the SLUF (Short Little Ugly Fucker, what would the F/A-35 have been?

ENUFF! Spending, that is. (I’m not an F-35 hater, btw.)

When we were leaving Death Valley we could hear the jets screaming through Star Wars Canyon. It was awesome

Brain fart, that should have been F/A-32, not -35.

I’ve always wanted to go to the Mach Loop. I’d have a much better chance of making Star Wars Canyon.

It’s just like Beggar’s Canyon back home.
